The Portsmouth Grammar School is located in Old Portsmouth and has been in existence since 1732. Rich in history, The Portsmouth Grammar School is a private independent day school that admits boys and girls.
The school contains a nursery, junior and senior school and a sixth form. All are located on the same site, except years 5 and 6, who are taught in a Victorian building nearby.
On site, the school has a sports centre which includes a gym, squash courts, sports hall and dance studios.
The school also owns substantial sporting facilities offsite, which includes tennis courts, an astroturf and rugby and cricket pitches.
Also among the school’s features is a large library, a drama centre, highly modern science labs and a music school.
The Nursery caters for children aged 2½ to 4 years old and is open from 8am to 5.30pm. It has a range of rooms for the children to feel comfortable yet also stimulated.
These include the Maths Area, the Creative Area and a Book Area as well as a variety of other educational spaces.
There is also a Parents Room to allow parents to stay for a couple of days whilst their child grows accustomed to the nursery.
The Junior School is for children aged 4 – 11 and contains around 500 pupils.
The 4 – 8 year old children are taught in separate classes within the main school building and the 8 – 11 year olds are educated in a building a short walk away.
All children learn to swim and sail as part of the curriculum and musical schemes in brass, woodwind and strings are available to every child at no extra cost.
There are also a number of extra curricular activities that run each year including skiing, adventure weeks and a language trip to France.
The Junior School is able to make full use of the Senior School’s facilities and an overwhelming majority of juniors go onto the Senior School.
The Senior School contains around 850 pupils, with the Sixth Form teaching another 300.
The first two years of the senior school are referred to as ‘Middle School’ and they benefit from having a range of subjects to study.
There is a very healthy set of clubs and societies and pupils are encouraged and expected to participate in a couple of their choice.
A very active house system is also in operation and forms an important function within the school.
A house system is also in place once the pupils move onto Years 9 – 11. As well as preparation for and undertaking of GCSEs and IGCSEs, pupils have the option to take the Duke of Edinburgh Award and participate in the Pupil Council.
There is also a huge variety of sporting, musical, dramatic and charitable opportunities as well as outdoor pursuits. Many seniors go onto the sixth form where they are able to take an International Baccalaureate Diploma or a range of A Levels.
For admission to The Portsmouth Grammar School, there are many open days throughout the year for parents and children to have a tour.
There are no special requirements for entry to the nursery, although entry is subject to places being available.
Entrance to the junior school requires children sitting English, Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning papers.
Candidates for The Senior School are also asked to take 4 papers (English, Maths, Non-Verbal Reasoning and a Modern Language) as well as participate in a 25 minute interview.
Interviews and projected GCSE grades are required for potential sixth formers.
