Salesian College is a private independent Roman Catholic day school containing an all boys senior school (ages 11 – 16) and a mixed sex Sixth Form (ages 16 – 18).
Founded in 1901, it is one of six Salesian schools in the UK and the only one that is run privately and independently. The college teaches around 600 pupils who are of both Catholic and non-Catholic backgrounds.
The College has a good set of facilities including a separate site containing playing fields at the nearby Park Road location.
A range of sports are played competitively including rugby, football and cricket and a sporting tours abroad are a regular fixture in the academic calendar. There is also a strong music department which regularly puts on performances and recitals.
Salesian College operates a strong House system with many activities run and organised by the Sixth Formers who have a strong sense of providing pastoral care to the younger children.
There is also a full-time chaplain at the school who is always available to staff, pupils and parents and the boys have frequent meetings with their form tutor.
Academically, the school has a broad curriculum and is proud of the fact that it’s selective process allows it to stretch pupils beyond the confines of the regular curriculum.
Boys in Years 7 – 9 take compulsory Latin, French and Spanish and all take Business & Communication and Religious Studies at GCSE in Years 10 & 11.
Post GCSEs, the Sixth Form offers a great range of subjects including Physical Education, Economics and Psychology.
Every year, sixth formers also get the opportunity make the pilgrimage to Lourdes in south western France.
Admission to the senior school normally occurs when the boys are 11 and an interest in registering must be made by the end of the November prior to the year of entry.
An entrance exam consisting of 3 papers in English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning is taken in the January before the start of the academic year in the September.
Reports are also required from the boys’ current school. For any boys entering later than Year 7, an additional paper in Science may also form part of the entrance exam.
Entry to the Sean Devereux Sixth Form is subject to satisfactory GCSE grades and interviews with the Headmaster and Deputy Headmaster.
They are also a couple of Open Days held during the year for parents and pupils to have a tour of the College.
